concert Attire

Why do Chamblee orchestra students wear formal black on stage?

For almost 2 centuries, classically trained musicians have traditionally worn formal black attire on stage.  This allows the audience to experience the thrill of seeing and hearing skilled musicians perform without being visual distracted from the music itself.  That is, after all, the main reason to have a music performance!

A High Standard From Head to Toe!

The Chamblee High School Orchestra has a decades-long reputation of musical excellence in our public performances.  We also believe this high standard should included our appearance on stage.  Student performers should use good judgment when selecting all parts of their concert attire to ensure it is professional, age appropriate, subtle and tasteful.  We always want to present the very best of ourselves in both sight and sound on stage!

Concert Attire Tops

  • Female musicians must wear either a black blouse or black buttoned down shirt.  Blouses must have 3/4 length or longer sleeves and cover the shoulders.  Front and back of blouse neckline must cover the torso and be professional and age appropriate.  Black buttoned down shirts must be long sleeved.  There should be no stripes, piping, designs, or stitching of a different color on blouses or buttoned down shirts.  There should also be no light-reflecting material or fabric (sequins, glitter, etc.).  Female students may wear a solid black neck tie or bow tie with the black buttoned down shirt.  The tie is optional for female musicians.
  • Male musicians must wear a black buttoned down shirt.  Black buttoned down shirts must be long sleeved. There should be no stripes, piping, designs, or stitching of a different color.  There should also be no light-reflecting material or fabric (sequins, glitter, etc.).  A solid black neck tie or bow tie must be worn with the black buttoned down shirt.  The tie is required for male musicians.

Concert Attire Bottoms

  • Female musicians must wear a solid black skirt, solid black palazzo style pants or solid black dress pants.  All bottoms must be to the ankle with no slits above the knee.  There should be no stripes, piping, designs, or stitching of a different color.  There should also be no light-reflecting material or fabric (sequins, glitter, etc.).
  • Male musicians must wear solid black dress pants with a solid black belt.  The shirt must be tucked into the waistline of the pants.  There should be no stripes, piping, designs, or stitching of a different color.  There should also be no light-reflecting material or fabric (sequins, glitter, etc.).

Shoes, Jewelry and Other Items

  • All musicians should wear black dress shoes.  Athletic shoes, casual shoes, flip-flops, Crocs etc. are inappropriate even if they are black.  Socks should be solid black.
  • Jewelry may be worn.  It should be tasteful, subtle and should be non-reflective.  Remember, you will be under stage lights.
  • Jackets, hoodies, purses, phones or other personal items should not be worn or carried onto the stage.  These items should be left in a secure off-stage location.

Want to make sure your concert attire is correct?

You may always bring your concert attire to school before a concert to have it pre-approved.  Please do not wait until the day of the concert!  If your concert attire is inappropriate for the stage, you will be asked to change before you are permitted to perform.
